How our services can help you with digestive health:
Acupuncture
But how can an Acupuncturist assist with my bloating or constipation you might wonder? Our acupuncturists are extensively trained in the area of gastrointestinal health, inserting tiny needles into specific acupuncture points to move energy and help regulate digestive function.
Stress is often at the heart of digestive complaints. Afterall, our gut is our second brain and will react to a stressed nervous system by interfering with digestive function. Specific acupuncture points help to regulate the gut-brain axis and decrease the stress response, which in turn improves digestive function.
Dr Miranda and her expert acupuncture team are also Naturopaths and will work with lifestyle, nutritional supplementation & dietary advice to help create a healthy bowel routine.
Naturopathy & Nutrition
Love your guts. This is our jam!
For the gut to be happy, it relies on two things- gut permeability and the microbiome. The microbiome is the constellation of bacteria that live on and in us. Our gut is populated with loads of beneficial bugs that help us poop properly and maintain a strong immune system. Digestion is the core of health, and the microbiome is one of the most important regulators of our overall health. In fact, we are more microbiome than we are human! We each contain 100 trillion microbes (bacterial cells), which is 10 times more than our human cells, and 100 times more than our DNA!
These beneficial bacteria know how to make our genes function properly. If there is an imbalance in bugs, the signals for optimal function fail to work appropriately and a myriad of potential symptoms develop including hormonal, emotional, immune, skin, gut etc symptoms.
Gut permeability relies on the cell junction to be nice and tightly packed together. When there are gaps or holes or the junctions are compromised (Leaky gut), food can leak out of the gut causing inflammation – this is particularly relevant to hayfever, eczema, allergies, autoimmune conditions, constipation, diarrhoea, digestive complaints, period pain, pelvic pain, headaches, thyroid issues, weight problems, sleep problems, exhaustion, fogginess, poor concentration, depression / anxiety / emotional imbalances etc.
For Fertility:
The condition and balance of bacteria in the microbiome can detrimentally affect embryo implantation. The microbiome can be a factor in poor oestrogen clearance resulting in excess oestrogen & hormonal imbalances, as the gut is responsible for metabolising and clearing oestrogen via the bowels.
Our vaginas have a microbiome too! As the continuation of one long pipe (mouth to our vagina & anus), our vaginas are also populated with little bugs that make for a fabulous microbiome ecosystem.
Causes of imbalance in the gut & vagina include:
- thrush is a yeast infection caused by Candida albicans fungus
- sugar, gluten & refined carbohydrates feed the fungi
- yeast & fungi also feed fungi
- stress – no surprises here!
- hormonal imbalance – oestrogen keeps our vaginas acidic
- antibiotics and medications knock out the good bugs
- pregnancy – changes in hormones
By working with your diet, creating nourishing, easy food & lifestyle we aim to prepare you mind, body and soul for your most perfect pregnancy.
How do we do it?
As a nutritional biochemistry lecturer, Dr Miranda intimately understands how digestion, absorption, metabolism & excretion of food impacts health, even if you are eating the most perfect diet, you might not be dealing with it very well.
Dr Miranda and her team are experts in dealing with all aspects of your digestive health.
We generally restore good bacteria with pre and probiotic foods as well as eliminating certain stressful or taking foods that overwhelm the gut or cause overgrowth of the unwanted bacteria. Sugar, gluten, wheat and dairy are the common culprits. These foods are difficult to digest which only adds more ‘stress’ to the situation.
Dr Miranda’s and her team will take the time to hear you, to see you, to get to know you and work with you to create a perfect dietary plan that makes sense to you. One that addresses your key digestive concerns. And one that you are more likely to follow.
