Acupuncture

The ancient art of Acupuncture is around 3000 years old. Today, acupuncture is increasingly popular as a natural, gentle and effective treatment for the management of most symptoms & dis-ease.

The gentle insertion of very fine, single use stainless steel pins into specific acupuncture points, stimulates and energises the body’s own recuperative processes, helping the body restore its own natural balance, enhancing well-being & vitality. Acupuncture reduces stress hormones, calms our nervous system and helps to modulate mood by providing amazing stress relief & emotional support.

The acupuncture needles are left in for 20-45 minutes depending on the condition being treated and patient requirements.

At Freyja, our acupuncturists are dedicated to supporting women of all ages, and creating a caring and safe environment to allow healing to occur.

At Freyja, our acupuncturists are highly skilled and professionally trained in the areas of women’s health, gynaecology and fertility, male fertility, IVF and donor egg IVF, pre- and postnatal care, and mental and emotional wellbeing. We also provide support for health concerns that may arise during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

We offer care for the whole family, including babies and children. When working with infants, we use shonishin — a gentle, needle-free Japanese technique — to support their wellbeing in a safe and effective way.

All of our acupuncturists have been specifically mentored and trained by Dr Miranda, working collaboratively under her guidance. Your initial consultation will be conducted by Dr Miranda, who may recommend weekly, fortnightly, or monthly sessions with one of our team members. She continues to oversee and manage your case, checking in every 4–12 weeks as needed.

Our practitioners are deeply committed to listening, understanding, and creating personalised treatment plans that reflect your individual needs. We aim to support your health journey with a combination of acupuncture, education, lifestyle and nutritional advice, and complementary techniques such as breath work and mindfulness — helping you feel empowered and aligned in body and mind.

At Freyja, we’re passionate about encouraging you to be and become all you can be, naturally.

Acupuncture for Fertility Support
Acupuncture offers gentle, holistic support for individuals and couples on their fertility journey, including those undergoing assisted reproductive procedures. It is often chosen to promote relaxation, emotional wellbeing and a sense of balance during what can be an intensive and emotional time.

Many people find that acupuncture provides a calm and grounding space throughout the IVF or donor-IVF process, helping them feel more centred and supported along the way

Baby on Board

Pregnancy is such an important time to nurture and nourish, relax and rejuvenate, and be at your very best, body, mind and spirit. There is increasing evidence to suggest Acupuncture can help with the management of some common symptoms experienced during pregnancy such as aches & pains, nausea & vomiting.

Acupuncture may help in the management of stress, helping to calm you and release unwanted tension.

Digestive Health

But how can an Acupuncturist assist with my bloating or constipation you might wonder? Our acupuncturists are extensively trained in the area of gastrointestinal health, inserting tiny needles into specific acupuncture points to move energy and help regulate digestive function.

Stress is often at the heart of digestive complaints. After all, our gut is our second brain and will react to a stressed nervous system by interfering with digestive function. Specific acupuncture points help to regulate the gut-brain axis and decrease the stress response, which in turn improves digestive function.

Dr Miranda and her expert acupuncture team are also Naturopaths and will work with lifestyle, nutritional supplementation & dietary advice to help create a healthy bowel routine.

Acupuncture and IVF Support

Studies have shown that as many as 15% of couples experience fertility issues throughout their reproductive lives, and are seeking alternative options to enhance their conception possibilities.

Acupuncture is often chosen as a complementary therapy alongside assisted reproductive procedures. Research has explored its potential role in supporting wellbeing and promoting relaxation during the IVF process.

Many people find acupuncture beneficial for creating a sense of calm and balance during what can be a physically and emotionally demanding time. Treatments are tailored to individual needs and may be used throughout various stages of the fertility journey

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified and properly trained practitioner. Most people tolerate it well, and side effects are usually mild, such as minor bruising or temporary soreness at the needle site.

As with any therapy, there are some risks—especially if not performed by a trained professional—so it’s important to see a registered acupuncturist who follows proper hygiene and safety protocols.

If you’re pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, or are taking blood thinners, let your practitioner know, as your treatment may be adjusted accordingly.

Does acupuncture hurt?

As the skin is pierced, a pricking sensation may be experienced when the needle is initially inserted. At Freyja, we use the best quality, finest needles for minimal discomfort. Following needle insertion, a relaxing, deep, heavy sensation may be experienced.

Can I expect any immediate benefits? How long does it take to work?

Immediate benefits are possible for pain relief, and to experience a sense of calm and relaxation.

Ideally, acupuncture should be delivered over a course of treatments, varying depending on the condition.

What is Shonishin – Paediatric Acupuncture

Shonishin is an ancient style of japanese needle-free acupuncture specifically for the littlest members of your family. Rather than the insertion of pins, shonishin involves the utilisation of a hand held metal tool, that with light pressure, gently sweeps over acupressure points and meridians. It is beautifully gentle, relaxing and restorative bringing little babies bodies back into balance.
